What is AI Label Checker?

An AI label checker inspects the metadata inside an image or video file for the digital footprints that platforms — like social networks and search engines — can use when deciding whether to attach an "AI-generated" label to your content. As generative AI tools became mainstream, detecting whether a picture was made by a person or an algorithm moved to the center of content authenticity discussions.

Most detection happens at two levels. First, signal-based detection looks at visible artifacts — unnatural hands, distorted text, warped geometry. Our tool does not do pixel-level detection. Instead, we focus on the second level: file-level provenance and metadata signals. When content is created or edited, software embeds a trail of information — the program used, timestamps, creator tools, special tags for AI workflows, and occasionally tamper-proof content credentials.

What file-level AI signals looks like

The most important is C2PA Content Credentials (backed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity). C2PA uses cryptographically signed data embedded in a file to record its edit history — which captures changes made with tools like Photoshop, and signatures written by generative models. A file with an active C2PA Content Credential saying "Generated by an AI tool" will almost certainly receive an AI label on platforms that honor the standard.

Beyond C2PA, our checker examines classic metadata blocks: EXIF (camera and image settings), IPTC (descriptive fields like caption and keywords), and XMP (Adobe's extensible metadata format). In those blocks, fields such as Software, CreatorTool, Description, or History have been found containing AI-related strings — for example a generator's name, prompt tokens, or model identifiers. We also scan watermark/tag blocks such as TruePic and JUMBF, using a curated, continuously updated pattern list.

Why the wording matters

We deliberately avoid making absolute claims. Metadata tells you signals are present or absent in the file — it does not prove how the content was created. A photo can carry AI-related fields for innocent reasons (AI-powered editing already exists inside many phones and cameras), and an AI image can be scrubbed clean of metadata before upload. That is why our results are phrased as "potential signal detected" and never as "this is 97% AI-generated".

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this tool tell me for certain if an image was made by AI?
No tool can do that with 100% certainty, and we don't pretend otherwise. Our checker only reports file-level signals — metadata, provenance records, and software markers that are actually present in the file. A signal is evidence, not proof. Platforms combine these signals with visible-artifact analysis, and even then the result is a probability, not a verdict.
What is C2PA Content Credentials?
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is an open standard that cryptographically signs content provenance into a file. When a camera captures a photo or a generative AI tool creates an image, it can embed a Content Credential that records the editing history. Platforms like social networks can read these credentials and use them to decide whether to apply an AI-related label.
Which metadata fields do you scan?
We scan EXIF (camera and image settings), IPTC (descriptive fields), XMP (Adobe's extensible metadata), C2PA Content Credentials, JUMBF (JPEG Universal Metadata Box Format), and watermark/tag blocks including TruePic. Within those we look for AI-related values in fields such as Software, CreatorTool, History, Description, ORIGINAL-MEDIA-TYPE, prompt text, and generative-model identifiers.
Is my image or video uploaded to a server?
No. The entire scan runs locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your file is read from disk into memory, analyzed on-device, and never transmitted anywhere. Nothing is stored, logged, or shared.
If I remove the metadata, is my image truly 'AI-free'?
No. Removing metadata only removes the embedded digital records. If the content was generated by AI, the visible characteristics remain. Metadata removal is useful for privacy and for controlling what signals travel with your file, but it does not change how the content was created.
Why does the checker say 'potential signal' instead of a percentage?
Because presenting a fake confidence percentage would be dishonest. A metadata field containing an AI-related word is a signal worth knowing, but it is not proof of AI creation, and the same file could carry that field for innocent reasons. We report what we found with clear, factual wording and let you interpret the result.
Can the checker be fooled by stripping metadata?
Yes. A determined person can remove all metadata from an AI image before uploading it, which is exactly why no metadata-only checker can be a perfect detector. Our companion removal feature works the same way: it cleans the file-level signals so you can see what the file looks like without them.
